Kennesaw Activities Board, Brand Ambassador, Sorority Life, Tour Guide and so much more!
The question that I always get is: “How did you get involved so fast?” and “How do you balance everything?” Well, I was not always like this. Coming to Kennesaw I was a little shy at first and only went to a couple of places around campus after class and then headed up with my best friend/roommate. In this blog, I will talk about how you can get involved and take the correct steps in making decisions.
How do I find out what clubs there are?
So with going to a college/university have a website for everything on your campus. They have one for the tutoring area, library, gym, and guess what, even one for clubs/organizations on campus. For KSU we have a platform called Owl Life. On this website, we have over 400 registered student organizations or RSOs on both our Marietta Campus and Kennesaw Campus. There are such clubs as a roller skating club, beard and mustache club, basketball club, fraternities, sororities, and so much more. A fun fact about this is if you don’t see a club that you like or don’t have an organization that you want on this campus, you can make one! With 5 other students and an advisor, you can petition to bring it to campus. Crazy we can do with just a couple of steps!
Which organization should I join or which one do I pick to join?
So during my freshman year, I wanted to get involved but did not know how and that is OK!
Step 1: Step out of your comfort zone
If you are going to class and back to your dorm your college experience is going to be
BORING!!! You have to learn your campus and know what’s going on. My advice would be to
go to Owl Life, find an event, and either attend by yourself or go with a friend or your roommate.
Step 2: Find One and Stick To It
Once you find that organization or club stick with it. Attend the events, get to know the
executive board, and be involved with that organization. I would then make sure you stay
connected with them via social media and ask them how to join if you want to be on the
executive board.
Step 3: Executive Positions
Some boards might offer executive positions, but this does not mean you have to apply if you apply. My advice is do not apply if you cannot fulfill that position. You can still be an active member of that organization but not have a position. Yes, we know it would look good on a resume but won’t look good if you can’t have that vouch. Once you find your niche on campus you can take it by the horns and steer it in your direction!
Until next time!
